1. UBUD

On the edge of the highlands, Ubud is nestled in an exotic landscape of lush rice terraces with the sacred volcano, Gunung Agung, looming above it – this is the artistic and cultural heartland of the island.

2. PURA TANAH LOT
For many, this is the Bali experience they will remember – the sea temple, surrounded by the waves of the Indian Ocean, with the setting sun in the background.

3. GUNUNG BATUR & DANAU BATUR
Lake Batur forms part of one of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes on the planet, a huge caldera from which the eponymous volcano rises up.

4. PURA BESAKIH
Pura Besakih – which is made up of around 30 temple complexes with more than 200 buildings – is considered the “mother” of all Bali temples and is the centre of religious life.

5. TIRTAGANGGA
If Oscars were awarded for cinematic views, the vista over the rice terraces to the distant sea and the neighbouring island of Lombok would be a very strong contender.

6. PURA LUHUR ULU WATU
The “temple over the rock” and the waves smashing against the coast 100m (330ft) down below are the two extremes of this unforgettable panorama.

7. DANAU BRATAN
When you see this mountain lake, embedded in the rainforest and surrounded by volcanoes, you will understand why the Danau Bratan is sacred to the Balinese.

8. BANGLI
The former royal village in the midst of verdant nature is home to one of the three most sacred temples on the island – it is hard to imagine a more magical location than this.

9. PULAU MENJANGAN
The pristine waters surrounding this nature reserve island offer crystal clear views of the marine world, even at a depth of 40m (130ft), making it the best dive spot in Bali.

10. KUTA
Sun, beach and fun – that is the dream for those who chose Kuta, possibly Southeast Asia’s most vibrant package tourism destination.
